First impressions of NYC [Jul. 26th, 2007|05:46 pm]
[mood | melancholy]

My new surroundings take some getting adjusted to, but with time I'll get acclimatized. At first, it was awful. Spending over $11,000 just to secure and move-in to an apartment stressed me out pretty badly. (Not to mention I got a fairly cheap apt. by NYC standards...) But I got it done, and with a little elbow grease from my friends we got my stuff moved down here on time.
There's so much shit going on here every night I have a hard time choosing what I want to do.
But since I'm currently broke, that at least makes some of my decisions easier. :)

The crowd in NYC lives in a world of its own. There are clothing items considered "in fashion" here that I'm sure would not qualify as fashionable anywhere else in this country. There are some colors I had never seen put that close to each other before I walked the streets of Manhattan. It doesn't help that I work about a block away from the Fashion Institute of Technology, aka the Queens of Wearing Random Artsy Shit. I also have no idea what technology is involved in fashion, but hey I'm new to this place.

Working at an indy game studio feels much different from my last (relatively corporate) job. I am the only tools programmer here, and I feel more like the work I do is really going to help build the company from the ground up. They haven't had anyone dedicated towards developing their pipeline, and it shows. Let's just say I work for a company called Kaos, and they are named appropriately. ^_^ There's many growing pains they are still going through that VV had passed years before I got there. I like it though - I feel much more useful here.

There are lots of downsides to this place too, but I don't want to dwell on them. Indy game studio in NYC is a dream come true, right?
